30 Days of Editorials

IF anything, the restrictions of quarantines and lockdowns around the world have shown us the levels of creativity and optimism that people can reach. With social media as a tool of distribution, people of all ages have come together as a community of the talented and bored to make works that make us smile or gasp in awe of their ingenuity. We’ve had the #NoRushChallenge where makeup lovers created transformation videos in the style of TikTok videos with quick transitions and punchy soundtracks. We also had people at home recreating famous paintings with whatever they could find in the homes they’ve been quarantined in. Our current favourite is the #30DaysofEditorials series where mostly South African creatives have been recreating editorial shoots and covers that initially appeared in fashion powerhouses like Vogue, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, Dazed and Elle. 

The series was the brainchild of Lindiwe Dim, a model and actress who said in the genesis Instagram post, “ I miss working so much. I’m longing for it. For the process and sharing that with other creatives and making beautiful things that make people feel things. It’s hurt so much to feel like I couldn’t do that for a while.

Then I realized I can, I just have to do it all myself. So I’m setting myself a challenge, to create every day for the next 30days. I’ve learned so much about different aspects of the process over the years so… time to put them to use. #30DaysofEditorials please join me if you wish, or let’s do a digital collab. This is the post that launched a thousand beautiful recreations of shoots that probably took thousands of dollars and crews of makeup artists, stylists and photographers to create.
