My battle with COVID-19: Robert Marawa

AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER

ROBERT Marawa, one of Africa’s popular broadcasters, has described his harrowing battle with COVID-19 and has pleaded with fellow South Africans not to take the pandemic lightly.

Marawa, host of Marawa Sports World, has been absent for two weeks from his broadcasting duties while fighting COVID-19.

In a statement, Marawa said he took the unusual step of disclosing a personal matter, his illness, because he believes that his journey with COVID-19, which has claimed the lives of over 57 900  South Africans, could help educate and “perhaps even save someone’s life”.

Marawa said what started out as flu-like symptoms ended with a positive diagnosis for COVID-19 and hospitalisation.

“I was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 and started self-isolation, while not taking any medically prescribed pharmaceutical medication. What started out as the flu-like symptoms we’ve all been warned about, quickly led to fulminant debilitating inexplicable fatigue without shortness of breath on Day 8 of my diagnosis. A doctor friend advised me to get an electronic device that measures pulse and blood oxygen concentration. When oxygen concentration dropped to 92, hospital admission was arranged via x-tray to establish lung condition. Chest ex-ray showed extensive pneumonia. On further assessment, I was transferred to the ICu for high care, where I stayed for the week. I was observed in the general ward for a further two days before I was discharged to go home.

“The medical professionals working tirelessly to revive my health concluded that the extensive level of COVID-19 pneumonia that I had developed could have resulted in a far worse experience had I not sought medical intervention as soon as I did. Thus, it’s extremely important that one seeks medical attention as soon as possible instead of isolating at home while the symptoms continue to intensify.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is real and it’s something my family and I have been dealing with. I, along with many South Africans have lost loved ones and dear colleagues to this virus and I as I now make my way to full recovery, I would like to warn everyone out there who is still taking this global pandemic lightly. The coronavirus is vicious on the body, it is tough battle and I encourage you to take care of yourself and your loved ones by following all the protocols put in place to assist in decreasing the spread of COVID-19 and even more so to seek medical attention sooner than later.”
