Fresh from making her debut into the male-dominated world of comic characters with magical powers, Ethiopia’s first female superhero “Hawi” is making her way into the history books.

“Hawi”, created by Ethiopian writer Beserat Debebe, has been nominated for the annual NOMMO Awards.

Debebe, who created the “Hawi” is also the founder of Etan Comics and has been nominated for the NOMMO Award for African Speculative Fiction for “Hawi” in the “Graphic Novel” category.

The NOMMO Awards were established in 2016 by the African Speculative Fiction Society, an organisation of African writers, editors, publishers and graphic artists. The NOMMO awards  honour works of speculative fiction by Africans. This work is defined as “science fiction, fantasy, stories of magic and traditional belief, alternative histories, horror and strange stuff that might not fit anywhere else”

In an interview with the OkayAfrica.com website, Debebe said the “Hawi” centered around a Ement Legesse, a young Ethiopian woman, who is the superhero who has to rescue her abducted mother. The story is told in colourful and compelling visuals. Debebe said writing “Hawi” was fulfilling. “A story about returning to one’s roots and having the courage to rise above the challenges that come with seeking reconciliation and belonging, it’s one we can all relate to whether literally or figuratively.’

Debebe is super proud of the nomination.

“This is incredible. I loved fantasy stories but I never recognised myself as a writer. All I wanted was to see a story with places I recognise and characters that think like me. To see this journey baloon from a simple”what if” into a community of passionate fans is exciting and motivating. Last year Nned Okorafor took this award for writing Shuri (Marvel’s Black Panther). She is a Hugo Award winner. To be recognised as a finalist in the same category as her means so much,” he told OkayAfrica.com. –  ©TFM.
