LEGENDARY South African broadcaster Bob “The Jammer” Mabena’s widow, Eucharist and his children paid a warm tribute to him at a funeral attended by family, friends and colleagues.
Mabena (51), who spent three decades in radio and television, died this week after a cardiac arrest.
In a moving tribute, Eucharist thanked Mabena for loving her in the amazing way that he did. She said the day on which Mabena passed – August 10 – of cardiac arrest, remained a nightmare. She was however thankful for the time they spent together as a couple, recalling the little things sweet things they did at home or on impromptu holidays.
“The 10th of August is still a vivid nightmare. The day I watched my superman put down his cape. The day I drove home knowing that I will never see you again,” she said. “I’m going to miss the warm kisses every morning without fail when you went to do your show,” Eucharist said.
Mabena’s children also took turns and read warm and loving tributes to their dad. His colleagues in broadcasting also paid glowing tributes to him, with wonderful and humourous anecdotes.
His radio career included time at Radio Bop, Metro FM, 94.7fm, KayaFM, PowerFm 98.7 and several stints on TV, where he hosted shows. He also produced music. His famous track, “Get Funky”, was recorded with soccer legend Doctor Khumalo.
