Menzi Ngubane to be buried on Saturday

POPULAR South African actor Menzi Ngubane will be buried on Saturday at his birthplace in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Ngubane have announced that the funeral will be live-streamed on social media platforms for the many fans who will not be able to attend because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The Ngubane’s stuffered a twin tragedy after his father, 91, died on Tuesday, three days after the actor’s death.

The Ngubanes are still in shock and are now preparing to a funeral for father and son. Baba Ngubane, who celebrated his 90th with Menzi last year, is suspected to have died of heart failure.

Menzi has continued to receive warm tributes from top South African actors and actresses, political parties and throngs of fans have paid glowing tributes to star actor Menzi Ngubane, who has died after suffering a stroke.

Popularly known as “Ngamla”, Menzi had roles in many films and shows on TV but popular for his roles in soapies Generations, Isibaya and The Queen.

In a statement, Ngubane’s family said: “We wish to thank everyone for their continued and sustained support and their prayers for our beloved son, whose battle with kidney failure and sugar diabetes  had become an open secret over the years. We wish to mourn the passing of our beloved son in private and will communicate the funeral and other arrangements in due course.”

Menzi, 56, went public with his battle with diabetes and kidney failure and had become an ambassador for those living with the diseases. He underwent a transplant in 2015. 

Menzi ‘s colleagues in the arts and his fans took to social media to pay tribute to him, posting pictures and videos of the veteran actor. There was also an outpouring of grief for actress Noxolo Magashalala who also died yesterday, aged 44. Maqashalala who starred in the TV drama series Tsha Tsha, was found dead in her home in Honeydew, Johannesburg.

Zolisa Xaluva: “Today my heart is broken. I am in tears as I write this. Menzi Ngubane is no more and the same about Noxolo Maqashalala. I send my heartfelt condolences, prayers and love to their families, friends, colleagues and loved ones. Your legacy will live, my brother.”

Star musician Thandiswa Mazwai: “Icon! A f… star! Lala ngoxole Menzi Ngubane. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Sello Maake ka Ncube: “The shocking news of Menzi’s passing leaves me with a numbing disbelief. A colleague and an excellent actor. Death be not proud.”

Actress Candy Magimisa: “As actors of Muvhango, we would like to express our deepest condolences for the loss of two of our industry colleagues, Menzi Ngubane and Noxolo Maqashala. May their souls rest in peace. Our industry is poorer with their exit. May their families  be comforted.”

He shall be remembered as one of South Africa’s greats in the entertainment world. A resilient worker who survived the apartheid era, migrated from KZN to Johannesburg  and made a name for himself.  His work stands as a tower of tenacity and dedication.”

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
