Missy Elliott is longevity defined

MPHO RANTAO

IF longevity had a name, it would be Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott.

The American rapper has returned to the spotlight in recent years with appearances with the surprise release of her first EP after more than a decade, Iconology, which featured five songs that told fans that Misdeanour is still the rap fiend that dominated the music charts from the 90s until the late 2000s.

Making a rare appearance, Elliott featured on the cover of Bottega Veneta’s (BV) first digital quarterly magazine as their muse for the upcoming season.

In the issue she dons two of the brand’s signature puffer jackets, flashy jewelry, bright neon sunglasses and a gold pendant with the word “iconic” proudly displayed.

It’s a classic take on Missy Elliott’s style – a rapper who has hardly been known for wearing flashy or glamorous fashion pieces, instead opting to be comfortable yet fashionable during the 2000s, where dressing for plus-size women was seen as a difficult task.

She previewed her looks for Bottega’s launch issue on Instagram, with the caption  “Sheeesh🔥🔥🔥The Shades SUPA SAUCY 😎#issuedbybottega #bottegaveneta” wearing the coats and sunglasses from the luxury label in photos shot by BV collaborator Tyrone Lebon.

The entire project involved other creatives including Barbara Hulanicki, Tyler Mitchell and Kelsey Lu.

Bottega Veneta’s issue coincides with the release in stores of “Salon 01,” a collection that was showcased in an intimate show in London, in front of guests such as Kanye West and Rosie Huntington-Whitley.

Bottega Veneta’s digital magazine marks their first major project since they silently vanished from social media earlier this year.

Missy Elliott made jaws drop when she released the music video for her lead single ‘Throw It Back’ from Iconology wearing her classic look of matching sweatsuits and gold hoops, but with colourful braids and bright makeup.

Her look in the video was what many fans called “Missy 2.0”, because after many years living in privacy, the rapper re-emerged and looked as though she had aged backwards instead of what many would assume would be a semi-wrinkled face as she neared fifty.

Even though her Iconology EP was her return to the music scene, Missy Elliott never really left. She continued to produce and write music for other artists in a number of genres, creating hit after hit during the 2010s. That’s not all.

After releasing Iconology, Elliott received her doctorate in music from and then made history by becoming the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
