Mixed Martial Arts: EFC Africa 89

The stage was for an amazing evening of fighting at the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) performance institute in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The EFC provided an evening to remember with 9 electric fights culminating in a show-stopping main event flyweight bout, won by Nkazimulo Zulu, by way of submission.

Zulu was able to force opponent Luthando Biko to tap out in the second round of the main event. Unfortunately, Zulu was not able to walk away with the championship belt due to missing the flyweight weigh-in limit.

Biko was caught by surprise, being a confident ground operator, by Zulu who is primarily a proficient striker.

“Yeah, I was caught by surprise,” says Biko”I tried to get out of it but it was on”

Biko went on to request a rematch with Zulu after the championship belt was left vacant once again. “I think the rematch will be like the first round,” Biko concluded.

Middleweight (83.9kg) JT Botha defeated Petie Coxenvia knockout at 4:46 of round one. Botha earned his first win in EFC, after having three prior fights cancelled. Botha will have his eyes focused on becoming middleweight champion – a position previously held by recent Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debutant Dricus Du Plessis.

“The beautiful thing is I get to train with that guy [Dricus Du Plessis] 24/7. It’s amazing to pick up on his mindset, on his way of life, and on his work ethic.” says Botha concluded.

Taka Mhandu, travelling with his camp from Ireland, made his debut in EFC in the Bantamweight (61.2kgs). Mhandu faced off against Asiashu Tshitamba from South Africa, winning the bout via split judges decision.

EFC showcased the best quality mixed martial arts content and rising stars are taking notice as they forge their name in meme

“I want to turn EFC into UFC, eventually, that’s my goal. This is the perfect platform to get me to where I want to be,” Mhandu said,”The production value is unbelievable, it’s really great to have this kind of exposure.”

In the lightweight (70.3kg) clash on the card August Kayambala from the Democratic Republic of Congo faced up against Cole Henning. Kayambala (nicknamed “The Barista”) improved to 5-2 for his EFC career after a split decision called the fight in his favour by a hair.
