NIGERIA, the west African football powerhouse and one of the serious contenders for the title have been sensationally eliminated from the African Cup of Nations by Tunisia, who beat them 1-0 at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua in Cameroon.
The star-studded Nigeria, who played superbly in the earlier rounds, winning all their games, never looked like themselves and allowed Tunisia to bully them and call the shots.
Tunisia surged ahead in the 47th minute when a swerving screamer from Youssef Msakni, hit from outside the 18 area, eluded the Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.
Nigeria, the three-time African champions, were stunned in the 64th when their star forward Alex Iwobi, who plays for Everton in the English Premier League, was shown a red card, just six minutes after he came on.
Tunisia will go on to face Burkina Faso in a quarterfinal in Garoua on Saturday, January 29. Burkina Faso defeated Gabon 7-6 on penalties after the last 16 clash ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
