Over 1 million may flee Sudan conflict, UN refugee agency says

THE U.N. refugee agency warned that an earlier projection that conflict in Sudan would prompt 1 million people to flee across its borders is likely to be surpassed. So far, the conflict between warring military factions that began in mid-April has caused nearly 600,000 people to escape into neighbouring countries including Egypt, Chad, South Sudan and Central African Republic. "Unfortunately, looking at the trends, looking at the situation in Darfur, we're likely to go beyond 1 million," Raouf Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, said in response to a question about its estimate in April for the coming six…

Putin under siege: Wagner Africa ops under microscope

A revolt by the Wagner militia in Russia poses a diplomatic quandary for Mali and Central African Republic (CAR), where forces from the mercenary group have played an increasingly central role in long-running internal conflicts. As the Wagner fighters barrelled towards Moscow after seizing a southern city overnight, spokespeople for the governments of Mali and CAR declined to comment on the turmoil and how it might affect their security strategies against militant groups. Both countries have sought closer ties with Russia and military support to fight the militants, saying in the past that their military cooperation agreements are with Russia rather than…

Sudan’s conflict will have a ripple effect in an unstable region – and across the world

SUDAN, Africa’s third largest country by land mass, shares borders with seven countries in an unstable region. What it will take to end civil war in the Central African Republic

What it will take to end civil war in the Central African Republic

IN recent months, Central African politicians and journalists have shared images of the military posing in front of different town signs – seemingly as proof of the state regaining control over a country caught up in civil war for almost a decade. TIM GLAWION, Research Fellow, German Institute of Global and Area Studies The civil war commenced when rebel groups in the country’s northeast formed a coalition in 2012 to topple President François Bozizé. Their declared interest was the defence of a marginalised population’s demands for development. However, the more likely trigger for the rebellion was Bozizé’s attempt to take…
