Namibia starts construction of Africa’s first decarbonised iron plant

NAMIBIA began construction of Africa's first decarbonised iron plant, to be powered exclusively by green hydrogen, the country's investment promotion body said. Steelmaking is one of the most polluting industries in the world and the industry is seeking to shift away from coal-fired plants and towards the use of decarbonised iron. South African court reverses earlier ruling against Amazon’s Africa HQ

A South African court has overturned an earlier order halting the construction of Amazon's new African headquarters in Cape Town after some descendants of the country's earliest inhabitants said the land it would be built on was sacred. Senegal architects ditch concrete for earth in revival of old techniques

NELLIE PEYTON and CHRISTOPHE VAN DER PERRE CONSTRUCTION is booming in Dakar, where unfinished apartment blocks tower over most streets, their exposed concrete bricks a dull uniform grey. In one site, however, a building stands out - the bricks the workers are laying are made of raw, red earth. Concrete is inexpensive and used with abandon in Senegal's capital, but it is poorly suited to the West African heat. On summer days, when temperatures frequently reach 100 degrees fahrenheit (38°C), the buildings become furnaces, cooled only with blasts of air conditioning. Earth naturally regulates heat and humidity, say the founders…
