Congo recalls envoys to Kenya and Tanzania over alliance launch in Nairobi

DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo recalled its ambassadors from Kenya and Tanzania for consultations after a new Congolese military alliance that includes rebels was launched in the Kenyan capital. Alain Tshibanda, spokesperson for Congo's foreign ministry, announced the X platform. The envoy to Tanzania was recalled because Tanzania hosts the headquarters of the East African Community, to which Congo also belongs. Earlier on Saturday, the Kenyan embassy's head of mission had been summoned to the foreign ministry in Kinshasa. The Kenyan government could not immediately be reached for comment. On Friday, Congolese politicians and groups including the M23 rebels, who have seized…

DRC elections: three factors that have shaped Tshisekedi’s bumpy first term as president

AFRICA’S second-largest country by land mass, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is scheduled to go to the polls on 20 December 2023. President Felix Tshisekedi will be seeking re-election. However, his first tenure has been decidedly mixed. Tshisekedi’s first term has been defined by three major factors: questions over the legitimacy of his 2019 election victory, violence in eastern DRC and the state of the country’s economy. REUBEN LOFFMAN, Lecturer in African History, Queen Mary University of London I have researched extensively and taught on contemporary Congolese politics for 15 years. In my view, while Tshisekedi has had some…

East African regional leaders demand ceasefire in eastern Congo

CLEMENT MANIRABARUSHA EAST African regional leaders on Saturday renewed their call for an immediate ceasefire by all sides in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that pits the country's military against a rebel group it has accused Rwanda of supporting. At a summit in Burundi's capital Bujumbura, the leaders of the regional East African Community (EAC) bloc called for an "immediate ceasefire by all parties," according to a communique issued at the end of the meeting. The M23 rebel group has seized large areas of eastern Congo's North Kivu province in a rapid onslaught since October 20…

Roam like at home: the East Africa Community has a scheme for cheaper call rates

SETH ONYANGO, BIRD STORY AGENCY EAST African Community (EAC) consumers could soon bid farewell to expensive roaming rates after the regional outfit said it was inching closer to standardising call tariffs for travel within the block. The One Network Area (ONA) imposes a cap on inter-state traffic calling tariffs at $0.1 per minute and eliminates mobile roaming fees, facilitating seamless communication and transactions. The single network area is expected to boost the region's economic development by improving connectivity and facilitating trade and investment. The initiative aligns with the EAC's broader goal of creating a single market and production base and…

Kenya deploys troops to DRC

EDWIN WAITA KENYA'S President William Ruto officially deployed troops to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to join an East African regional force aiming to end decades of bloodshed. The seven countries of the East African Community (EAC), which Congo joined this year, agreed in April to set up a joint force to fight militia groups in Congo's east. The Kenyan troops will join a contingent from Burundi. Despite billions of dollars spent on one of the United Nation's largest peacekeeping forces, more than 120 armed groups continue to operate across large swathes of eastern Congo, including the M23 rebels, which Congo has…

East African integration is alive – even though leaders haven’t been united over COVID-19

Peter O'Reilly, Post-doctoral Research Associate, Liverpool John Moores University Chris Vaughan, Senior Lecturer in African History, Humanities and Social Sciences, Liverpool John Moores University THE outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed further fault lines in the workings of the East African Community (EAC), often perceived as a beacon of regional integration on the continent. There have been some gestures of regional solidarity. For example, the Secretariat dispatched mobile testing laboratories across the region. But the overall response of the partner states – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda – has been fragmented. The EAC was re-established in…
