AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER JACINDA Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, has reacted negatively to the plans for a film about the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, calling them ill-timed. News has been travelling from Hollywood on the plans for a film that would be based on the mosque shooting, in which a gunman opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, killing 51 people and wounding 40.  Ardern responded to a question posed to her on  TVNZ’s Breakfast show, saying that she felt that a film on the attacks felt “too soon” and “too raw” for the people of New Zealand.  “While…

Biden administration joins global campaign against online extremism

THE United States will join a New Zealand-led global campaign to stamp out violent extremism online, the White House said, making a policy change two years after the administration of former President Donald Trump declined to participate. The initiative was started by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron in 2019 after a gunman killed 51 people at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch while live-streaming his rampage on Facebook. New Zealand declares climate emergency, promises carbon neutral govt by 2025

PRAVEEN MENON NEW ZEALAND promised its public sector would become carbon neutral by 2025 as it declared a climate emergency, a symbolic move that critics said needed to be backed with greater actions to reduce emissions. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the climate emergency declaration was based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's findings that to avoid more than 1.5 degree Celsius rise in global warming, emissions would need to fall by around 45% from 2010 levels by 2023 and reach zero by around 2050. "This declaration is an acknowledgement of the next generation. An acknowledgement of the burden…

China finds coronavirus on frozen meat, packaging from Latin America, New Zealand

THE Chinese city of Jinan has revealed that it had found coronavirus on beef and tripe and their packaging from Brazil, Bolivia and New Zealand, while two other provincial capitals detected it on packaging on pork from Argentina. China is ramping up testing on frozen foods after repeatedly detecting the virus on imported products, triggering disrupting import bans, even as the World Health Organization says the risk of catching COVID-19 from frozen food is low. In Jinan, capital of eastern China's Shandong province, the goods involved were imported by a unit of Guotai International Group, and Shanghai Zhongli Development Trade,…

New Zealand’s Ardern storms to re-election with ‘be strong, be kind’ mantra

PRAVEEN MENON JACINDA Ardern turned speaking from the heart and smiling through adversity into a winning formula for a blowout re-election as New Zealand's leader yesterday. Now Ardern, who made a name for herself by crushing COVID-19 in the country and healing the nation after a massacre of Muslims by a white supremacist, faces a challenge to show her leadership extends beyond crisis management and kindness. Her Labour Party won a landslide victory in the general election, a resounding mandate that ushers in New Zealand's first purely left-leaning government in decades and may allow her to form a single-party government.…

New Zealand shooter emotionless as victims’ families address sentencing hearing

PRAVEEN MENON A white supremacist who killed 51 people at two mosques in New Zealand last year watched without emotion on Monday as relatives of his victims recounted the horror of a massacre which prosecutors said he carefully planned to cause maximum carnage. Australian national Brenton Tarrant, 29, has pleaded guilty to 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and one charge of committing a terrorist act during the shooting rampage in the city of Christchurch which he live-streamed on Facebook.
