At least 48 killed in road accident in western Kenya, police say

AT least 48 people were killed in a road accident in Londiani, western Kenya when a lorry carrying a shipping container veered off the road and ploughed into several vehicles, police and witnesses said. Footage of the accident's aftermath carried by local broadcasters showed the twisted wreckages of cars and motorbikes alongside damaged minibuses and trucks. Thirty-seven killed in Mali bus crash

THIRTY-seven people were killed in a road accident in south-central Mali on Tuesday, the transport ministry said, after a passenger bus collided with a truck. The force of the crash, which happened 20 km from the town of Segou, sheared off the front section of the bus and scattered luggage and goods across the road, according to photos and video shared online. Injured passengers were being treated in hospital in Segou, the ministry said. Africa has by far the world's most dangerous roads, registering over 26 deaths per 100,000 population, according to the World Health Organisation.

Twenty killed in road accident in Egypt

TWENTY people were killed and three injured in an accident involving a bus and a truck on a desert highway in Upper Egypt, the health ministry has disclosed. The bus from Cairo collided with a truck loaded with cement, which was stopping due to a malfunction, in the province of Assiut, about 370 km south of the capital, the provincial governor's office said in a statement. Twenty die in Algeria road accident

NEWS

Twenty people, mostly African nationals, have died after a vehicle carrying them overturned in southern Algeria, the civil protection agency said. Eleven people aboard the vehicle were also injured in the accident near Ain Mguel town in the desert province of Tamanrasset, 2,000 km (1,250 miles) from the capital Algiers, it said in a statement. Tamanrasset is a crossing point for illegal migrants from neighboring countries, mainly Mali and Niger.
