Austria School Shooting: Gunman Kills 10 at Graz Secondary School

AT least 10 people, including the gunman, have been killed in a shooting at the BORG Dreierschützengasse secondary school in Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, authorities have confirmed. The victims comprise six females and three males, excluding the shooter, who was a 21-year-old former pupil of the school. The attacker died by suicide at the scene, reportedly found in a bathroom.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. local time, with the gunman armed with a pistol and a shotgun targeting students in two classrooms, one of which he had previously attended. At least 28 others were injured, including students and teachers, many seriously, and were taken to nearby hospitals and care centres for treatment.

Authorities believe the shooter acted alone, with investigations ongoing into his motive. Local reports indicate he had been a victim of bullying. The incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in Austria outside wartime.

The city of Graz, known for its educational institutions and diverse population, has been deeply shaken by the tragedy. Mayor Elke Kahr described it as a “terrible tragedy,” while Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called it a “national tragedy” and announced three days of national mourning. President Alexander Van der Bellen expressed profound sorrow for the victims and their families.

The school was evacuated and secured by police special forces, and the situation is now under control. Emergency services, including 158 paramedics and crisis intervention staff, responded swiftly to the scene. Hospitals in the region were alerted and prepared to receive patients.
