VIRAL sensation Elsa Majimbo has bagged her first international award as a comedian – and it’s all thanks to her many fans across the globe.
Majimbo was awarded the ‘African Social Star of 2020 at E!’s People’s Choice Awards, which were held virtually in the United States. She beat out Nigerian vlogger Dimma Umeh and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa, who were placed in second and third place respectively.
Fans and social media users worldwide were encouraged in the month of October to vote for their favourite stars in over 40 categories across pop culture, music, movies and television.
Other nominees for the award included Tik Tok star Karl Kugelmann, rapper Sho Madjozi, actress Thuso Mbedu, Wian van den Berg and Lydia Forson. This is the second year that the E! People’s Choice Awards has created a category dedicated to African stars in the history of their ceremony.
Elsa Majimbo thanked her fans for receiving the award, “Thank you to everyone who voted. I’m so happy to have won, over the moon and through the roof”.

I WON THE E! PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD!!!!! I LITERALLY COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT ALL OF YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT. This year has been a whirlwind of discomfort and confusion for everybody, but for me it's also brought with it a great lesson, that sometimes even the greatest obstacles in our path can be opportunities in disguise. A big thank you to the people at @eentertainment for recognizing game 🕶
Majimbo’s success has steadily grown since her videos went viral on Twitter and Instagram earlier this year, gaining applause from big names such as Chrissy Teigen, Lupita Nyong’o and Usain Bolt.
The 19-year old has also recently collaborated with popular beauty brands Fenty Beauty and MAC, as well as being profiled in Vogue, on CNN and The New York Times.
