Bazoum wins Niger presidential election

BOUREIMA BALIMA NIGER’S ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum was yesterday declared the winner of its presidential election, while his opponent alleged fraud and opposition supporters burned tyres in the streets. Bazoum, a 61-year-old former interior minister, won 55.75% of the vote in Sunday's election, according to the electoral commission. He beat Mahamane Ousmane, a former president who was toppled by a coup in 1996. The provisional results must still be confirmed by the constitutional court. The election is meant to usher in Niger's first transition from one democratically elected leader to another, with President Mahamadou Issoufou stepping down after two…

Guinea starts Ebola vaccine campaign

GUINEA started an Ebola vaccination campaign yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, as authorities race to contain the first resurgence of the virus there since the world's worst outbreak in 2013-2016. The vaccination was launched in Gouecke, a rural community in N'Zerekore prefecture, where the first cases were detected on February 14, the WHO said, adding that the launch started with vaccination of health workers. "The vaccination uses the 'ring strategy' where all people who have come into contact with a confirmed Ebola patient are given the vaccine, as well as frontline and health workers," the WHO said in…

SA defence minister denies contradicting President

AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER SOUTH African Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has denied deliberately contradicting President Ramaphosa in the description of last week’s unrest in South Africa as an insurrection. Mapisa-Nqakula was forced to defend herself after the government said her recorded position, made during a briefing to Parliament that there was no insurrection, was made without facts.  She said: “The president has spoken. It was an attempted insurrection. I confined myself to counter-revolution.  Ultimately remember, any element of counter-revolution ultimately may well lead to an insurrection in the country. Counter revolution is about doing all manner of things which are meant…

Mali leader unharmed in knife attack

TIEMOKO DIALLO and PAUL LORGERIE MALI’S interim President Assimi Goita, a special forces colonel who orchestrated two coups in the last year, said he escaped unharmed after an assailant attempted to stab him during prayers at a mosque in the capital Bamako. The president's office earlier said the attacker was overpowered by security officers, and investigations into the incident were ongoing. Mali, the theatre of French-supported operations against al-Qaeda and Islamic State-linked insurgents for a decade, was thrown into political turmoil after a military junta led by Goita toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020. Goita served as vice-president…

“Enough is Enough”, say angry Algerians

THOUSANDS of demonstrators defied a heavy police presence in Algiers yesterday for a march to mark the second anniversary of a mass protest movement that convulsed Algeria before the COVID-19 pandemic forced it off the streets. Chanting "A civilian state not a military state!", "Enough is enough!" and "The people want independence!", protesters walked through the centre of the capital, waving national flags, watched by large numbers of police. Some of the protesters hope to revive the twice-weekly protests that surged through Algerian cities from February 2019 for more than a year, regularly bringing tens of thousands of people to…

SA court grants delay in Zuma’s trial

A South African court has granted former President Jacob Zuma's request for a delay in his arms deal corruption trial, and adjourned proceedings for three weeks. Zuma this month started a 15-month sentence for contempt of court, a ruling that triggered some of the worst unrest of the post-apartheid era. He is also accused of receiving kickbacks over a $2 billion arms deal from the 1990s. He pleaded not guilty in May to charges including corruption, fraud and money laundering. He has evaded prosecution for more than a decade, and portrayed himself as the victim of a politically motivated witch-hunt.…
