SOUTH Africa’s Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has recovered from COVID-19, the government has announced.

In a statement, the Government Communication and Information Systems said Mapisa-Nqakula and her husband, Charles, the national security advisor to President Cyril Ramaphosa, have both fully recovered after testing positive and their symptoms have cleared.

“The Minister and Mr Nqakula tested positive recently and are currently still in self-isolation. We are glad that all their symptoms have cleared and we are looking forward to them finishing their 14 days of mandatory self-quarantine period.  Both the Minister and Mr Nqakula have been working from home during this time. Members in the private office of the Minister have also been tested,” said government spokesperson Phuma Williams.

Mapisa-Nqakula was the second cabinet minister in South Africa to contract COVID-19. Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, is in self-quarantine after testing positive to coronavirus.

Wiliams offered the government’s well wishes to all who have contracted the Covid-19 disease as well as condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones due to the coronavirus.

The South African government urged all people to play their part by observing all health protocols of washing hands regularly, wearing a mask covering both the mouth and nose when in public, and practicing physical distancing.
