MPHO RANTAO

NIGERIAN media ‘It Girl’ Beverly Naya has ventured into fashion with her new line.

Called ‘Be Naya’, Naya launched her line as a ready-to-wear collection that would range from dresses, jumpsuits and stylish sets in Ankara print for the everyday woman.

“Be Naya is for the confident and fearless woman, the one who knows she can have it all because she’s worth it! I want women to feel amazing in my pieces and I want them to feel and ooze confidence in every room they walk into.”

The actress and television presenter spoke to Nigerian publication Bella Naija on her clothing line, explaining that while the process was a challenge, she is excited to share some of her favourite ankara patterns and outfit pairings.

“It felt pretty natural for me to go into the fashion space and I must say, it’s been quite an enjoyable journey so far. I respect Nigerian fashion designers so much though, it’s hard work but it’s a welcomed challenge!”, Naya told Bella Naija.

Even in its early stages, Beverly Naya already has her favourite prices that she cannot wait for her fans to wear for their casual days or formal events. “I absolutely love the Alika luxe top paired with the Onika skirt, it’s just so colourful yet so classy. My other favourite is the Zawadi pair.”

The Instagram page of Be Naya already has over 12 000 followers, making her line one of the fastest-growing Instagram presence for a Nigerian fashion brand.

“I intend to build a brand that will be worn by women all around the world. It’s our first collection but the goal is to keep growing and building the Be Naya clothing brand, I’m excited about what’s to come!”

The British-Nigerian actress has not only been preoccupied with her new clothing line. Naya released her hour-long documentary, ‘Skin’ on Netflix in 2020, which looked at the societal issue and perceptions of colourism and its effects on black people.

Naya compiles the stories of Black women in Nigeria who have been treated differently for having dark skin. They speak openly about the pressures of being defined by their skin color.

Naya told CNN that she was inspired to produce the documentary because of the low self-esteem that she suffered being bullied for her skin while growing up in the United Kingdom.

“I had crooked teeth and I had really bad eczema, and even though I fixed my teeth and my skin cleared over time, the damage had already been done to my mental state and how I saw myself. So as I got older, I realized that I just didn’t feel beautiful”, said Naya.
