LIYA Kebede’s label Lemlem is releasing a capsule collection with H&M.

The Swedish retail giant announced that the collection between them and Lemlem would feature a range of easy to wear shorts, tops, caftans, sundresses, trousers, cover-ups and colourful swimwear in Lemlem’s signature pastel hues.

The collection will also feature handmade jewellery that will be the first ever hand-crafted jewellery to be sold in H&M. Only select stores will stock the collection across Europe, Africa, North America and Oceania.

In an interview, Kebede tells Harper’s Bazaar: “What’s exciting about partnering with H&M is the way that they reach an immense audience across the world. H&M’s interest in a small brand that is sustainable, that is promoting artisans, puts a focus on us and gives us an incredible platform to all these other people, customers who would not have looked at us. They understand the importance of sustainability and community and artisan work.”

The collaboration between Lemlem and H&M also includes a donation of $100 000 from H&M to Kebede’s Lemlem foundation. “[Lemlem] aims to create a pathway out of poverty for women artisans in Africa. It’s an exciting time of growth for us and for the women we support,” Kebede explains.

“This collaboration was just kind of incredible. The timing was incredible. And I can’t wait to see the impact that it’s going to have on us this year. It’s fun. I’m excited.”

On her Instagram post, Kebede explained that the name Lemlem translates to ‘Blossom’ in Amharic, which is what she hopes will happen with Lemlem following their collaboration with H&M for the capsule collection.

“I hope this is the beginning of a blossoming new era for fashion, with hopefully more sustainability, more visibility to black-owned brands, more heritage and of course more of a much needed, more colourful and more uplifting wardrobe palette for our world today.”, she wrote.
