A sombre silence fell over the marquee, broken only by the sound of muffled sobs as Kenya bid a heartrending farewell to 21 young souls, victims of a devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy. The air was thick with grief as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects.
Before the crowd, a row of small white coffins stood in stark contrast to the sea of black-clad mourners. Each pristine casket, a poignant symbol of childhood innocence cut short, bore a bouquet of flowers and a photograph of a smiling young face – boys aged nine to thirteen, their futures cruelly extinguished.
As parents, siblings, and community members struggled to comprehend the magnitude of their loss, the tragedy stirred painful memories of Kenya’s troubled history with school fires. The incident echoed the 2017 blaze in Nairobi that claimed ten young lives and stood as a grim reminder of the over 60 arson cases reported in public secondary schools in 2018 alone.

May God comfort the grieving families. For the remaining students, I hope they get counselling.
Btw, the government and Kenya has no soul treating the tragic fire as a normal thing. pic.twitter.com/cWwjaDMsgE
A special message from William Ruto, the President of Kenya, was delivered to the grieving families. In the message, delivered by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
Ruto said: “We are pained by the loss of young lives in the Hillside Academy fire tragedy. As investigations continue we commit to support the families affected by the horrific accident.”
While the nation mourned, questions lingered. Law enforcement officials worked tirelessly to uncover the cause of the fire that had torn through the boarding school in Nyeri town, central Kenya. For the grieving families, however, no answer could fill the void left by their departed children.
As the funeral service progressed, there wasn’t a dry eye in sight. The collective anguish of a community and a country weighed heavily on all present, united in sorrow for lives so brutally cut short, and in hope that such a tragedy might never strike again.
Emotions are heightened as the remains of the 21 Hillside Endarasha Academy victims are solemnly presented at Mweiga Stadium for a memorial service.

Regrettably, the government has yet to hold anyone responsible for this tragic incident. pic.twitter.com/inizBaZGv1
