Iran says it executes leader of women trafficking network

IRAN'S judiciary said that it had executed the head of a network that trafficked Iranian women to neighbouring countries for prostitution. It said Shahrooz Sokhanvari, a man known as "Alex”, was the leader of an “escort and trafficking network of Iranian women and girls to some countries in the region”, the judiciary's Mizan news agency reported. It said Sokhanvari was executed on Saturday morning "for the crime of human trafficking for the purpose of prostitution”. Iranian media reported in 2020 that "Alex" had been detained in Malaysia in coordination with Interpol and brought to Iran. He was sentenced to death…

Iran hangs two men for blasphemy

IRAN has executed two people who had been sentenced to death for blasphemy, the judiciary's news website Mizan reported, drawing an angry reaction from the human rights group Amnesty International. Yousef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare were executed for crimes including blasphemy, insulting the religion of Islam, the prophet and other sanctities, Mizan reported. The website reported that the two were running dozens of online anti-religion platforms dedicated to the hatred of Islam, the promotion of atheism and insults to sanctity. Amnesty International condemned the executions on its Twitter page for Iran. "Today's execution of Yousef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli…

Congo’s M23 rebels killed 20, carried out mass rapes, Amnesty says

FIGHTERS from the Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 rebel group killed at least 20 men and raped scores of women and girls in the east in November, Amnesty International said in a report. The militia, which stepped up its offensive in regions near the borders of Rwanda and Uganda last year, dismissed the accusations, saying they were part of a smear campaign. The reported death toll was much lower than estimates from the United Nations, which said in December the rebels executed at least 131 people in reprisal killings in a campaign of murder, rape and looting in Kishishe and Bambo villages.…

Struggle over Egypt’s Juhayna behind arrest of founder, son – Amnesty

EGYPTIAN authorities are holding the founder of the country's largest dairy products and juices producer and his son in conditions that amount to torture because of their refusal to cede their assets, according to Amnesty International. There was no immediate response to a request for comment to Egypt's state information service. The arrests of Safwan Thabet, founder and former CEO of Juhayna, in December, and of his son Seifeldin two months later, shook Juhayna, a household name in Egypt. The authorities accuse them of belonging to and financing a terrorist group -- commonly a reference to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood…

Democracy delayed in Eswatini

Democracy delayed in Eswatini

THREE months after Eswatini was convulsed by pro-democracy protests and the worst rioting in its history, King Mswati III’s hold on power is as absolute as ever, his defiance of demands for constitutional reform just as resolute. The protests, which began in June and degenerated into three weeks of frustration-fueled looting and arson across the country, have demonstrated just how entrenched the monarchy is – exposing the vulnerability of the opposition rather than the royal establishment. The government’s response to the unrest was to send troops into the streets, who together with the police, officially killed 27 people, although rights groups say…

Sex for water scandal hits Libyan migrants camp

ROBIN EMMOTT AMNESTY International has revealed that migrants held in Libyan detention camps are subject to horrific sexual violence at the hands of guards, including being forced to barter sex for clean water, food and access to sanitation. The report, which focused on migrants intercepted in the Mediterranean and who disembarked in Libya in 2020 and 2021, suggests worsening conditions in the camps despite being recently placed under the control of the Libyan interior ministry. Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have called for their closure. Camp guards say, "maybe you want fresh water and beds ... let…

Some 200 rights groups push for U.N. arms embargo on Myanmar

MICHELLE NICHOLS MORE than 200 civil society groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have called on the U.N. Security Council to impose an arms embargo on Myanmar to help protect civilians peacefully protesting a military coup. Since the military seized power on February 1 and ousted an elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar has seen daily protests and a surge of violence with security forces killing hundreds of civilians. "Imposing a global arms embargo on Myanmar is the minimum necessary step the Security Council should take in response to the military's escalating violence,"…

No justice for victims of 2020 Mali protests, coup

ALISON KENTISH IT has been about a year since anti-government demonstrations and a coup in Mali, which saw 18 people, including a 12-year-old boy being killed. But there has been no justice for the families of those injured and killed by defence and security forces during last year’s May to August protests. Amnesty International released the findings of a report into injuries and fatalities that occurred titled “Killed, wounded, and forgotten? Accountability for the killings during demonstrations and the coup in Mali”. Following field and remote interviews with victims’ families, civil society representatives, journalists and members of the judiciary, it…
