Construction of Africa’s largest science experiment, world’s largest telescope, underway in South Africa

CONSTRUCTION of the world’s largest telescopes has officially begun in South Africa and Australia, with 2028 as the completion date. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project will see an area of about 33 000 square meters share data from space that the gigantic complex telescopes will collect. Over 130,000 antennas and 200 satellite dishes will make up the SKA, according to the project's website. The networked telescopes will enable astronomers to study space better and faster and to detect signals from objects in the universe's farthest reaches. According to the project’s scientists, the SKA-Mid in South Africa will operate with…

Duke header gets Australia past Tunisia for first World Cup win since 2010

NICK MULVENNEY A Mitch Duke header gave Australia their first World Cup victory in 12 years with a 1-0 win over Tunisia in a hard-fought contest that kept alive their hopes of progressing from Group D. Target man Duke scored in the 23rd minute with a glancing header that flew past keeper Aymen Dahmen's despairing dive, and the Socceroos then held back a largely toothless Tunisian attack over the remainder of the contest. The victory, only the third for Australia in six visits to the World Cup finals, was the perfect response to their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of…

World Cup-bound Kuol ‘lethal’, says Mariners coach Montgomery

CENTRAL Coast Mariners coach Nick Montgomery labelled Australia's World Cup-bound teenager Garang Kuol "lethal" as the forward signed off from A-League action with a brace from the bench against Macarthur FC. The 18-year-old, the youngest member of the Socceroos squad heading to Qatar, scored twice to pull the 10-man Mariners level against Dwight Yorke's team but a late goal from Jed Drew earned the Bulls a 3-2 win that moves them to fourth in the standings. But it was the performance of Kuol that was the key talking point as the youngster underlined once against why Australia coach Graham Arnold included…

Australia defends scrapping of French submarine deal, Macron and Biden to talk

LIDIA KELLY and JOHN MAIR AUSTRALIA has defended its decision to ditch a multi-billion-dollar order for French submarines and opt instead for an alternative deal with the United States and Britain, saying it had flagged its concerns to Paris months ago. Canberra's move enraged Paris, triggering an unprecedented diplomatic crisis that analysts say could do lasting damage to U.S. alliances with France and Europe. It has also riled China, the major rising power in the Indo-Pacific region. The United States has sought to assuage the anger in France, a NATO ally, and the French government spokesman said on Sunday that…

Australia sticks by plan to re-open border in mid-2022

LIDIA KELLY AUSTRALIA is sticking to plans to start re-opening to the rest of the world only from the middle of next year, officials said on yesterday, resisting mounting pressure to end the closure of international borders. In March 2020, Australia closed its borders to non-nationals and non-residents and has since been allowing only limited international arrivals, mainly citizens returning from abroad. "All the way through we will be guided by the medical advice," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said at a televised briefing. "We will be guided by the economic advice." Earlier in the day, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told the…

Toddler airlifted to hospital after dingo attack on Australia’s Fraser Island

A two-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital with bites to his head and body after a dingo attacked him on a popular Australian holiday island yesterday, rescue services said. "It's believed the child, who was holidaying with his family, had been playing outside a house, when neighbours heard a commotion," RACQ LifeFlight Rescue said in a statement. "They reportedly went to investigate and saw a dingo attacking the toddler." The boy, accompanied by his mother, was flown to a hospital from Fraser Island off the eastern coast and is in stable condition. The dingo is a protected species on…

Sex consent app proposal sparks criticism in Australia

Sex consent app proposal sparks criticism in Australia

BEH LIH YI ONE of Australia's top police officers faced criticism on Thursday for suggesting an app that records sexual consent could be used to address a rise in sexual assault cases. Mick Fuller, police commissioner for New South Wales, said an app that allowed people to digitally document their agreement before having sex could be "part of the solution", after cases of sexual assault in the state rose by 10% last year. "I am just suggesting: is it part of the solution? Maybe it's not, but if we don't do something then more and more women are going to…

The Kenyan powerhouse improving women’s lives in Australia

The Kenyan powerhouse improving women’s lives in Australia

WHEN Rosemary Kariuki arrived in Sydney in 1999 after fleeing violence in Kenya, a year went by without a single neighbour saying hello to her. Alone and longing for the sense of community she had back home, she decided to take action.  On Christmas Day, 2001, she wrote her contact details and an invitation to have tea or just say hello on Christmas cards and slipped them under the doors of more than a dozen flats in her building.  After that, her neighbours greeted her cheerily, and Rosemary had found her life's work.  "When I came here, nobody gave me…

Facebook ‘unfriends’ Australia: global uproar as news pages go dark

BYRON KAYE FACEBOOK faced a worldwide backlash from publishers and politicians yesterday after blocking news feeds in Australia in a surprise escalation of a dispute with the government over a law to require it to share revenue from news. Facebook wiped out pages from Australian state governments and charities as well as from domestic and international news organisations, three days before the launch of a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination programme. Though the measure was limited to Australia, denunciations came from far afield, with politicians elsewhere describing it as an attempt to put pressure on governments that are considering similar measures around…
