Violence flares for 3rd day in Darfur

MILITIA fighters staged a deadly attack in Sudan's Darfur yesterday, residents said, as doctors said the death toll from a separate attack that began two days earlier in the region had risen to more than 100. The surge in violence will add to concerns about the departure of an international peacekeeping force that stopped patrolling in Darfur on January 1 ahead of its full withdrawal and replacement by a Sudanese force. The latest attack took place close to the town of Gereida, where two residents said an Arab militia had attacked members of the Fallata tribe. One resident, Mohamed Salih,…

83 dead after militia attack in West Darfur

SOME 83 people have died and 160 people are injured after militia attacks on the West Darfur city of El Geneina in Sudan, a local doctors' union has disclosed. Violence has increased in Darfur in recent months, and two weeks after U.N. peacekeepers stopped patrolling the region ahead of a full withdrawal. After the attacks on Saturday and Sunday, Sudan's defence minister said military reinforcements were being sent to the city. The country's sovereign council said in a statement that members of the armed forces were among the victims. The attacks followed a fight, reported by both local organizations and…

Darfur displaced fearful as UN peacekeepers hand over to local forces

NAFISA ELTAHIR and KHALID ABDELAZIZ AHLAM Hamid fled from her home in Sudan's Darfur region 17 years ago when government troops and militiamen, some on horseback, raided her village and clashed with rebels. Now she worries she will be at the mercy of those forces once more, as an international peacekeeping mission deployed to contain the conflict abruptly pulls out. UNAMID, a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force established in 2007 to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian assistance in Darfur, stopped patrolling on Jan. 1, days after a vote by the U.N. Security Council to end its mandate. After signing…

United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s Darfur to end

MICHELLE NICHOLS  A joint United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region will end on December 31, the U.N. Security Council has decided, more than 13 years after it established the operation. The 15-member Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that terminates the mandate for the mission, known as UNAMID, at the end of the month and outlines a six-month drawdown of troops with a complete withdrawal by June 30. According to the U.N. website of the peacekeeping mission, there are currently some 4,000 troops, 480 police advisers, 1,631 police, 483 international civilian staff and 945 national…

Sudan and main rebel groups formalise peace deal

DENIS DUMO  SUDAN Suda's power-sharing government and several rebel groups on Saturday formalised a peace agreement aimed at resolving decades of conflict which left millions displaced and hundreds of thousands dead. Three major groups signed a preliminary deal in August - two factions from the western region of Darfur and one from the southern region - after months of talks hosted by South Sudan. Another powerful rebel group, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, which had not participated in initial peace negotiations, agreed last month to join new talks hosted by South Sudan. Dancers from Darfur and…

Sudan peace talks offer little hope for protesters in Darfur

NAFISA ELTAHIR and KHALID ABDELAZIZ EFFORTS to bring stability to Sudan's conflict-ridden Darfur region have failed to reassure residents fearful of rising violence which has cast a shadow over peace negotiations. The fall of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 raised hopes that Arab militias he supported, which have been accused of atrocities, would be reined in under the civilian-military government which replaced him. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is negotiating with rebel groups that had fought Bashir. But they hold little sway 17 years after a conflict which killed 300,000 people and displaced 2.5 million erupted. Over the last month, 100…
