SETH ONYANGO, BIRD STORY AGENCY A little less conversation and a lot more action, please: that was the call from African states as 2022’s United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) kicked off in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Though previous COPs have been held on the continent – in Durban, South Africa, in 2011 and Marrakech, Morocco, in 2016 – this year’s gathering has been dubbed “Africa’s COP” by many, including the UN Foundation’s Vice President for Climate Change and the Environment. The tourists, estimated at between 17,500 and 20,000, are mostly in the Egyptian Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, with some further south in Marsa Allam. A few have flown out of their own accord but the embassy is working with Egyptian authorities and tourism companies to set up returns to countries neighbouring Ukraine, said the embassy deputy head…

Egypt says concrete wall will protect resort of Sharm el-Sheikh

EGYPT says a recently constructed 36 km concrete and wire barrier encircling Sharm el-Sheikh will help protect tourism at the Red Sea resort on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula. Authorities in southern Sinai hope to revitalise tourism which has been dented by upheaval after Egypt's 2011 uprising, the crash of a Russian passenger jet in Sinai in 2015 and the coronavirus pandemic. In 2005, bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh killed dozens in one of Egypt's deadliest militant attacks. The security barrier is made of concrete slabs with stretches of wire fencing separating the resort from the desert around it.…
