UNIDENTIFIED gunmen have killed 16 soldiers and wounded six others in an ambush in southwest Niger, two security sources said yesterday. The attack on an army patrol occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Tahoua Region of the West African country, near where raids killed 137 civilians in March. It is unclear who carried out the attack, but the area is overrun by jihadist groups with links to al Qaeda and Islamic State. At least 137 killed in Niger massacre

ARMED men have killed at least 137 people in southwestern Niger, local government officials said, revising the toll up from a previous estimate of about 60. The attackers raided three villages in the Tahoua region, which borders Mali. A security source blamed Islamic State, whose local affiliate is active in the zone. Alfouzazi Issintag, mayor of Tillia, the rural commune to which the villages belong, told Reuters there were about 60 deaths but that he did not yet have a final toll.
