At UN, Kenya’s president asks world not to leave Haiti behind

KENYAN President William Ruto urged the United Nations Security Council to formally back a security support mission to Haiti, which Kenya has shown a willingness to lead, saying the Caribbean country "deserves better from the world." The council could vote as soon as next week, diplomats said, on a U.S.-drafted resolution supporting a multinational police deployment. Haiti last year asked for help to combat violent gangs that have largely overrun the capital Port-au-Prince. "Kenya is ready to play its part in full, and join with a coalition of other nations of goodwill - and there are many - as a great friend and true…

U.N. arms embargo on CAR extended for year, China abstains

MICHELLE NICHOLS  THE United Nations Security Council has extended a Central African Republic (CAR) arms embargo and targeted sanctions regime for another year, however, China abstained in the vote because it believes the measures should be removed. The 15-member Security Council imposed the arms embargo on CAR in December 2013 when mainly Muslim Selaka rebels ousted then-president Francois Bozize, prompting reprisals from mostly Christian militias. A targeted sanctions regime was agreed upon in 2014 when U.N. peacekeepers were also deployed to the country. The gold and diamond-rich country of 4.7 million people have since been mired in violence. "There appears…

UN backs Libya ceasefire plan

MICHELLE NICHOLS  THE United Nations Security Council gave the green light on Friday for the deployment of 60 U.N. ceasefire monitors to Libya and called on the country's new unity government to prepare for free, fair and inclusive elections on December 24. A ceasefire in Libya has held since the autumn, but the main road across the front lines from Sirte to Misrata remains closed. The Security Council unanimously approved Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' proposal for the deployment of the monitors. "The monitors would be deployed to Sirte once all the requirements for a permanent United Nations presence have been met,…

Eritrea admits presence in Tigray

MICHELLE NICHOLS ERITREA has told the United Nations Security Council that it has agreed to start withdrawing its troops from Ethiopia's Tigray region, acknowledging publicly for the first time the country's involvement in the conflict. The admission in a letter to the 15-member council - and posted online by Eritrea's Ministry of Information - comes a day after U.N. aid chief Mark Lowcock said the world body had not seen any proof that Eritrean soldiers have withdrawn. "As the looming grave threat has been largely thwarted, Eritrea and Ethiopia have agreed - at the highest levels - to embark on…

Myanmar police open fire, kill one protester

POLICE in Myanmar yesterday opened fire on protesters against last month's military coup, killing one man, as international condemnation rained down on the junta ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the crisis. The violence took place as the military lost a tussle over leadership of its U.N. mission in New York and the United States announced new sanctions targeting military conglomerates after the deaths of dozens of civilian protesters. Activists demanding the restoration of the elected government of veteran democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi held more demonstrations in several towns and cities, with a crowd…
