Serial rapist – who violated women in China and Britain – jailed for life

ZHENHAO Zou, a 28-year-old Chinese PhD student, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years after being found guilty of drugging and raping at least 10 women across London and China between 2019 and 2023. The full scale of his crimes, however, is now believed to be far greater than initially uncovered.

At the conclusion of his trial at Inner London Crown Court, police revealed they had recovered nearly 1,300 videos from Zou’s devices, many of which he filmed himself, documenting assaults on women, some of whom remain unidentified. While the jury convicted him of 11 counts of rape against 10 women, detectives now believe Zou may have assaulted more than 50 additional women, based on the video evidence and the ongoing investigation.

Following widespread media coverage and an international appeal, at least 24 more women have come forward to report that they may have been victims of Zou, bringing the potential number of survivors to over 60. Police say the “offending group is far greater” than previously realised, and the investigation remains open with a dedicated team pursuing new leads.

Zou targeted primarily young Chinese women, often fellow students, whom he met through WeChat, dating apps, or social gatherings. He would invite them to his flat for drinks or study sessions, drug them with substances such as butanediol, and then assault them while they were unconscious or unable to resist. Zou meticulously recorded many of these attacks using hidden cameras or his mobile phone, and kept personal items from his victims as “trophies”.

Victim impact statements read in court described severe psychological trauma, ongoing physical symptoms, insomnia, and a profound loss of trust in others. One survivor recounted waking to find Zou raping her after a night out in London’s Chinatown, while another described being haunted by the humiliation and loss of dignity she suffered. The graphic nature of the evidence was so distressing that jurors were excused from future jury service for two decades.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Appeal

The Metropolitan Police have launched an international appeal, particularly targeting the Chinese student community in London and women who may have met Zou in China between 2019 and 2024. Officers stress that some women may not even realize they were victimized, given the use of incapacitating drugs. Police continue to investigate the new reports and are working with the Crown Prosecution Service on potential further charges.

Commander Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police emphasized, “Our thoughts have always been with the courageous victim-survivors of Zou’s heinous and predatory crimes… Our investigation remains open and we continue to appeal to anyone who may think they have been a victim of Zou. Please come forward and speak with our team – we will treat you with empathy, kindness and respect”.
