Africa must expand vaccine production, leaders say

ALEXANDER WINNING AFRICA must expand vaccine manufacturing to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and future health emergencies, including by forging partnerships to boost expertise and investment, continental leaders and international health officials said yesterday. Africa has struggled to acquire coronavirus vaccines and imports the vast majority of its medicines and medical equipment, leaving it at the mercy of overseas supplies. Its mainly poor nations are falling behind in the global coronavirus vaccination race with under 13 million doses administered so far to the continent's 1.3 billion people, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said last week. Congo names new Cabinet, cementing president’s power over predecessor

DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo's Prime Minister announced a new Cabinet on Monday, completing a government overhaul by President Felix Tshisekedi that strengthens his hold on power. The new government is a further blow to Tshisekedi's predecessor and former coalition partner, Joseph Kabila, who stepped down in January 2019 but maintained control of some ministries, the legislature, judiciary and security services. Since announcing the end of their alliance in December, Tshisekedi has succeeded in replacing Kabila's allies at the head of the parliament and senate, as well as the Prime Minister. Dispute over extension of Somali presidential term

ABDI SHEIKH SOMALIA’S lower house of parliament voted on Monday to extend the president's term for another two years but the Senate rejected it - a standoff deepening divisions that analysts say are hampering the fight against Islamist insurgents. The chamber's speaker said the measure extending President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed four-year year term, which had expired in February, would let the country prepare for direct elections. But the opposition said the move was legally dubious and accused the lawmakers of political chicanery. The Senate rejected the move. "The decision directly violated the rules of governance and the constitutional law of…

eSwatini forces unhappy with the SADC

AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER PRO-democracy forces in eSwatini, where scores have been killed and injured by the police, have criticised a delegation from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for meeting with the government only and ignoring them. One of the unhappy organisations is the Economic Freedom Front in Swaziland. The party’s spokesperson Sphelele Nkomondze said they were angry that the SADC delegation met with the government and then post-postponed, to a later date, a meeting with the civil society. “This is clear that the SADC cannot hold member states accountable for gross violation of human rights in front of them,…

Interpol considers “red notices” for Guptas

INTERPOL "red notices" urging the arrest of the businessman brothers Atul and Rajesh Gupta - friends of former president Jacob Zuma - and their wives for alleged fraud and money laundering are being considered, according to the South African prosecutors. A red notice is a request to law enforcement officials worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action. Contacted for comment, Interpol said many red notices are not made public and referred Reuters to South Africa's national police authorities for further information. South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Tuesday that the…
