World Adherence Day tackles critical health challenge

In a groundbreaking initiative to address one of the most pressing issues in global health, the World Heart Federation (WHF) is set to launch the first World Adherence Day on March 27, 2025, with a powerful campaign dubbed #DontMissaMoment.

The campaign highlights a critical problem in healthcare: treatment non-adherence. According to recent data, only 50% of patients in high-income countries and an even smaller percentage in developing nations consistently follow their prescribed treatment plans, leading to devastating health consequences.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now account for approximately 75% of global deaths, resulting in at least 43 million annual fatalities. In South Africa alone, deaths from major NCDs have increased by 58.7% between 1997 and 2018, with hypertension affecting nearly 4.74 million people as of 2019.

Virosha Deonarain from Servier Southern and Eastern Africa emphasizes the potential impact, stating, “Improving adherence could significantly lower long-term mortality risk.”

The campaign aims to address treatment non-adherence through multiple strategies:

  • Educating patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals
  • Encouraging open dialogues between doctors and patients
  • Engaging communities through workshops and social media
  • Advocating for improved medication access and support systems

Dr. Martin Mpe, President of the SA Heart Association, calls for a collaborative approach: “If we all work together, we can ensure adherence is a shared responsibility, not a burden.”

The initiative provides patients with key questions to ask about their treatment, including understanding medication purposes, necessary lifestyle changes, and follow-up protocols.

Healthcare providers have identified several barriers to treatment adherence:

  • Lack of awareness
  • Treatment fatigue
  • Financial constraints
  • Misconceptions about medication side effects

World Adherence Day 2025 invites individuals to commit to better treatment adherence, emphasizing that proactive health management can prevent unnecessary complications and reduce healthcare costs.
