A Kenyan Multinational Security Support (MSS) officer was killed in a tragic accident on Sunday in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, marking a sombre moment for Kenya’s international peacekeeping efforts. Several other Kenyan officers were injured in the incident, which comes amid ongoing security challenges that have plagued Haiti for over a decade.
The accident unfolded in the Haitian capital as Kenyan police officers deployed as part of the MSS mission worked alongside other international forces to stabilise the volatile security situation in Haiti. In response to the incident, Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of Kenya’s finest officers. Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to the MSS mission, emphasising the importance of Kenya’s participation in promoting international peace and security.
“The sacrifice made by our officers reflects Kenya’s dedication to global peacekeeping and the values we uphold as a responsible member of the international community,” Mudavadi said in a statement.
The United States also extended condolences and appreciation for Kenya’s role in Haiti. Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott attributed the following remarks to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who spoke yesterday with Musalia Mudavadi: “He expressed his sincere condolences following Sunday’s tragic accident in Port-au-Prince that claimed the life of a Kenyan MSS officer and injured several others. The Deputy Secretary underscored the United States’ deep appreciation for Kenya’s leadership of the MSS mission and for stepping up as a global leader in a complex and challenging security environment.”
Kenya’s decision to send police officers to Haiti dates back to international calls for support in stabilising the Caribbean nation. Haiti has grappled with severe internal strife for more than a decade, stemming from political instability, economic hardship, and recurrent gang-related violence that have crippled governance and security.
