THE life and times of actor and filmmaker Shona Ferguson, who died recently due to COVID-19 complications were celebrated in a special and emotional way as he was laid to rest in Johannesburg today.
Ferguson’s widow Connie, their children, brothers and colleagues in the film industry paid warm tributes to him, describing him as a loving father, a dedicated family man.
His daughter Lesedi Masilo-Ferguson recalled the love and laughter that Ferguson shared with her and the family. “You could either hear or smell him. We lost a very special piece of our heart …To the original king of Joburg Aron Arthur Ferguson, you can rest now. Our love will ever transcend our lives,” she said.
In s special tribute to her husband of 20 years, Connie said:
“I never anticipated where we are today. God brought you into my life 20 years ago. 31 of July was 20 years that you and I knew each other. I anticipated another 20 years with you. I really thought we were going to get old together. I remember when we saw old people at Cresta holding hands and would say, see, that’s us in a few years. We would hold hands, if we were not holding hands already.”
Connie paid tribute to the strength her husband displayed while fighting COVID-19 in hospital.
“I missed you for 28 days.. I had never known anyone as strong as you. How you fought! Skat I want to know that I am so proud of you. Even on that hospital bed you defied the odds so many times. I am hurting right now, my heart is bleeding. I wasn’t ready for you to go. The girls were not ready for you to go. We are a praying family but we have never prayed so hard in our lives. Everytime we went to see you we would pray with you. Praying for you to heal. I am beginning to understand that God heals differently. I can’t imagine my life without you. The past couple of days have been almost like a dream.
“You had been prepping for this day all your life because everything you did, you did with passions. You have taught so much. You taught unconditional love. To never go with one foot in…. You were not the one for half measures. Everyone who has ever known you will know that you loved hard, cared hard, worked hard and loved the Lord hard – unashamedly.
“Babe, this what you did for me and a lot of people. You touched a lot of lives. You taught people how to lve . You changed the narrative, Sho. I may have only had 20 years but our 20 years, what you and I had in 20 years, most people never get to experience a smidgen of that in their lifetime. How lucky am I . You loved me in a way that I never knew was possible to love. You had a God kind of love.”
Ferguson’s brother Dominique described him as a legend and an inspiration to many. “I can stand up anywhere in the world and shout “Mr Sho” and know with absolute certainty that the world will kowtow and they know that we’re speaking of a legend and I’m not saying it because he is my baby bro, that’s just the right fact,” he said.
