COVID-19, the European Championship and Bitcoin dominated conversations on Twitter in Africa last month, according to research from Africa No Filter, as Africans appeared keen to jump on the global cryptocurrency bandwagon.
In nearly all countries on the continent, coronavirus was the leading trending topic with tweeps in 53 states engaging in topics related to the deadly pandemic.
Data analysed and compiled by Africa No Filter shows the just-ended #Euro2020 was the second most popular hashtag in 46 African countries.
“#Bitcoin came in third place and was the most popular hashtag in Tunisia. #KeepitOn – used to raise concerns about Twitter’s shutdown in Nigeria – came in at fourth in 43 African countries. A similar hashtag, #Twitter Ban was also used for the same concern but was not a widely used as #KeepitOn; however, became the most popular hashtag in Rwanda, according to the report.
“We also see World Environment Day and World Refugee Day becoming one of the widely used hashtags tagged with 41 and 40 African countries respectively. #June12Protest, to protest what protesters called bad governance in Nigeria, was tagged in 31 African countries, and didn’t only trend at number one in Nigeria, but in other three African countries, namely; Benin, Kenya and Tanzania.”
