Celebrating a year in service of South Africans

Scientology Volunteer Ministers (SVM) in South Africa have surpassed the millionth hour of dedicated volunteer work since lockdown started, to protect and save millions of lives against this deadly virus.

Members of the SVM have made the achievement by going into hotspots and offering international standard sanitization and skills development so people have the practical tools to protect and rebuild themselves during such times.

Working hand in hand with communities from all over South Africa, they worked daily since the announcement of the lockdown to offer solutions that would protect millions. While starting to protect themselves at first, it soon spread out into the community then throughout the entire country and it hasn’t stopped since.

“All our volunteers had gone through training called the 19 Tools for Life courses which enabled them to be of much help in such times,” said Sandile Hlayisi Public Affairs Director for the SVM. “When others heard about those tools, they banged on our doors to learn as well so they too could help.”

The Tools for Life training program was written by L. Ron Hubbard more than 50 years ago to empower communities.

Hlayisi brags about having trained over 11,000 people ranging from different religious groups, medical staff, students, early childhood development centers, community forums and all the way to Extended Public Works Programs volunteers (EPWP) who then joined fogging teams on the frontlines tackling the virus.

In total, SVM teams have sanitized over 60,000 buildings nationwide, from orphanages, elderly houses, courthouses, clinics, government buildings and more, and over 1.1 million taxis, buses, ambulances, police cars and fire trucks, at their own cost, to further protect millions.

The work of the SVM teams have been appreciated by the SA government.

”I wish to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers for your work which has far exceeded my expectations. The Department of Social Development kindly appreciates your efforts for decontaminating and sanitizing dozens of our buildings and created safety and security for our most vulnerable communities and our officials even during the period of COVID-19 Second Wave.

“Your intervention was exquisitely superb and prompt and was done from the goodness of your heart without any type of compensation. We have never imagined that our partnership was going to be so successful and exemplary with spontaneity,” said Dr.  Zuki Yokwana, DDG of Social Development.

Hlayisi also brings up that the backup they received from other religious groups, municipalities and the Country encouraged them to continue despite the hardships and dangers involved. The Scientology Volunteer Ministers did risk their lives daily by going into the hotspots, tackling the virus head on and coming out the other side without a single positive case amongst them for over 350 days.

“At the onset, it must be stated that we are very encouraged and inspired by the work that your organization conducts, especially with the concept of broader community development. Your relief and recovery work during incidents and disasters is also commendable and welcoming,” stated the Head of National Disaster Management Centre, Dr. Mmaphaka Tau.
