BMW Unleashes R2.8 Million M5 Touring in South Africa

High-performance estate delivers 535kW hybrid power and 305km/h top speed

BMW South Africa has launched its most powerful estate car ever – the M5 Touring – with a staggering price tag of R2,795,000 that positions it among the country’s most expensive performance vehicles.

The luxury German automaker’s flagship wagon arrives 12 months after its sedan sibling claimed Performance Car of the Year honours in the 2025 Old Mutual Insure South African Car of the Year awards, where it also secured third place overall.

“The addition of the Touring derivative to our arsenal speaks to the overwhelming popularity of this model,” said Renier Beneke, General Manager for Sales and Distribution at BMW South Africa, referencing the strong market reception since the M5’s local debut at BMW M Fest in October 2024.

Hybrid Powerhouse Delivers Supercar Performance

The M5 Touring’s headline-grabbing specification centres on BMW’s third-generation M HYBRID V8 powertrain, combining a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an electric motor to produce a system output of 535kW and 1,000Nm of torque – figures that rival dedicated supercars.

Despite its family-friendly estate body, the vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 305km/h when equipped with the optional M Driver’s Package, while the hybrid system enables up to 70 kilometres of zero-emission electric driving.

Performance technology includes M Drive Professional with Boost Control, M Laptimer and Track View functions typically reserved for track-focused machinery, plus an M sport exhaust system and mixed 20- and 21-inch wheel and tyre combinations.

Premium Positioning in Luxury Market

The R2.8 million asking price – which includes VAT and BMW’s Motorplan service package – reflects the vehicle’s positioning as a halo product in BMW’s local lineup. Standard equipment includes M leather steering wheel, M multifunction seats, M carbon mirror caps, panoramic glass roof and rear sunblinds.

Buyers can choose from ten exterior colours, including the M5-exclusive Isle of Man Green and Marina Bay Blue, plus premium BMW Individual options Storm Bay and Frozen Deep Grey. Interior customisation spans six upholstery choices and either M Carbon Fibre or BMW Individual Fineline Dark Oak trim finishes.

Optional extras remain deliberately limited, comprising only model badge deletion, trailer tow hitch, M Carbon brakes with high-gloss black callipers, maintaining the vehicle’s exclusive positioning.

The M5 Touring launch reinforces BMW’s commitment to the South African luxury performance market, where appetite for high-end German engineering continues to drive premium segment growth despite economic pressures.
