AFTER a nervy day that seemed to be a marquee performance from Sao Tome & Principe, the Bafana Bafana duo of Percy Tau and Themba Zwane struck two goals each in Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to complete their two-legged qualifier with an overall score of 6-2.
Tau, easily one of the best players on the park, also enjoyed moving into ninth on South Africa’s all-time goal scoring list with his 88th minute strike.
Bafana are in a favourable position to qualify for the finals in Cameroon. They are tied with group leaders Ghana on nine points. This makes the second leg between the two nations a must win. Ghana defeated the South Africans 2-0 in the first leg in Accra.
Two-time winners Algeria have confirmed their place in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez struck as the defending champions were held by Zimbabwe to a 2-2 draw. This will be the 19th time the nation has competed in the tournament, as they became the third team to book their spot in the next edition. Tunisia and Senegal were the first two teams to seal their space.
Cameroon put two goals past Mozambique to stand atop Group F ahead of the latter with 10 points. Vincent Aboubaker and Belgium-based striker Serge Tabekou both scored for the Indomitable Lions to put them six points above the hosts.
