Hosts Rwanda off to good start at Basketball Africa League

BOITUMELO RANTAO

RWANDA’S very own Patriots started proceedings in the maiden Basketball Africa League (BAL) game with a dominant 83-60 win over Nigeria’s outfit Rivers Hoopers.

The Nigerian side was tapped, in part due to the strength of their roster, to dominate the opening fixture against home side BBC Patriots at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. The Patriots were led by power forward Brandon Costner, finishing with a game-high 20 points, and center Prince Ibeh who registered 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Forward Taren Sullivan and Nigerian international Ben Uzoh led the way for the Rivers Hoopers – finishing with 15 and 12 points respectively. Ugandan international Robinson Odoch Opong scored 5 points in 21 minutes. The Rivers Hoopers were touted early to be successors in the fixture until sparks from Dieudonne Ndizeye, 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Sedar Segamba, 6 points and 2 assists, turned the tide in favour of the Patriots.

This was a must-win game for either side as they face BAL title hopefuls Union Sportif Monastir from Tunisia and Gendarmerie Nationale Basketball Club from Madagascar later in Group A.
