Farewell my mentor and brother, Khehla “Bra K” Mthembu

MPHO MOERANE

TODAY I woke up to the sad news of the passing on of my mentor and brother, Bra Khehla Mthembu.

Bra K was one of the most hardworking individuals I have ever met. An inspirational father figure to many in the political and business circles. A consummate professional, unifier, and shrewd perfectionist.

At the time of his passing, Bra K was a Board Member at City Power, an electricity utility within the City of Johannesburg, which falls under my department, Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD).

Bra K dedicated his entire life to promoting black leadership excellence, supporting small businesses in all the sectors he worked in. He occupied leadership roles in institutions such as Old Mutual, Gauteng Economic Propeller, Gauteng Tourism, and, at the time of his death, a Board Member at City Power.

Board service is one of the toughest volunteer roles of all, but Bra K performed it with diligence, dedication and tenacity.

He was instrumental as part of those who were working hard to turn the entity around and ensure that it gets back to the viable, profitable vehicle within the City of Johannesburg.

For two terms at City Power Bra K distinguished himself as a judicious steward of our organization and never flinched in the face of difficult decisions faced by the utility and the Municipality as a Stakeholder.

Bra K was the best suit because he was tried and tested for turning around institutions such as Old Mutual, Sun International, Gauteng Tourism, and setting them on a path to profitability and success.

Bra K believed in black advancement and equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, gender or creed, and used his influence in Black Business Executive Circle, Black Business Council, Black Management Forum, Foundation for African Business & Consumer Services (Fabcos), to advance those ideals. He was not selfish, and ensured that everyone benefited from every venture he got involved in, particularly those from townships and poor backgrounds.

Thank you for the guidance and inspiration. I certainly learnt a lot from you, both on a personal and professional level, and will forever be grateful for the time I spent around you.

As a famous activist once said, “Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it.” You Bra K, proved to be both wise and virtuous.

To Bra K’s family, friends, and country, may you have strength to deal with this loss during this difficult time. Homotsehang!

Rest well Bra K.
