Trump poised for White House return as Democrats falter

FORMER President Donald Trump appears headed for a return to the White House after securing the Republican nomination, while Democrats face their most challenging campaign in recent memory.

At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump made a dramatic entrance to thunderous applause, days after surviving an assassination attempt that has reshaped the presidential race. The former president, sporting a bandaged ear from the bullet that grazed him, was officially nominated as the party’s 2024 standard-bearer.

The assassination attempt, which claimed the life of a Trump supporter, has thrust the deeply divided political landscape into sharp focus ahead of the November 5 election. President Joe Biden, who has struggled to maintain momentum in his reelection bid, condemned the attack and called for Americans to resolve their differences at the ballot box. Former US President Barack Obama also condemned the attack.

Trump has selected Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. This selection of Vance, a former Trump critic and prominent in the right-wing circles, has energised the Republican base, though questions remain about the ticket’s appeal to moderate and independent voters. With his selection, the 39-year-old Vance, author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” has completed a remarkable transformation from Trump critic to staunch ally.

Meanwhile, Biden faces mounting challenges. Speculation about his potential withdrawal from the race continues to swirl following a poor debate performance last month. Though Biden has rejected these rumours, his increased unscripted appearances have yet to quell Democrats’ concerns about his reelection prospects.

Recent polls show Trump leading in several crucial swing states, while a string of legal victories has bolstered his campaign. Most recently, a federal judge dismissed charges related to classified documents retained at his Florida residence.

As the convention progresses towards Trump’s prime-time acceptance speech on Thursday, the former president’s resurgence and the Democrats’ struggles suggest a potential shift in the political landscape, with Trump gaining momentum in his bid to reclaim the presidency.
