Stellantis Partners with SOS Children’s Villages to combat youth unemployment in South Africa

AUTOMOTIVE manufacturing giant Stellantis has launched a major initiative with SOS Children’s Villages to address South Africa’s growing youth unemployment crisis by providing 800 young people with driver’s license training and certification.

The partnership comes as South Africa’s youth unemployment rate has reached 50.47%, its highest level in recent history. The program aims to enhance employability by removing a significant barrier to job entry in multiple sectors.

“The initiative aligns with our commitment to driving positive change in the communities in which we operate,” said Stellantis Managing Director, Mike Whitfield. “By equipping youth with a skill that increases their employability, we aim to contribute to reducing the high unemployment rate and empowering these young people to create better futures for themselves.”

The comprehensive program will guide participants through the entire process of obtaining their driver’s licenses, from learner’s license preparation to the final driving test. Each participant will receive a K53 learner’s manual, classroom training, and hands-on driving lessons delivered through 11 local driving schools contracted by the partnership.

Critically, the initiative covers all associated costs, including test fees, car rentals for practice, and license issuance, ensuring participants face no financial barriers during the process.

Nqabakazi Gina, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages in South Africa, emphasized the practical impact of the program: “We are excited about the partnership with Stellantis, and the wonderful opportunity created for our young people to be more employable. The prospect of a bright future for our young people is within their grasp. A driver’s license is a license to enter the economy.”

The partnership is expected to open multiple employment avenues for participants, including positions in ride-hailing services, delivery operations, and opportunities as drivers for various businesses. Some participants may also use their new qualification to establish their own transportation-related enterprises.

“We believe in the power of creating opportunities for youth and this project is just one of the many ways in which Stellantis is committed to making a meaningful difference in South Africa,” Whitfield added.

This initiative falls under Stellantis Philanthropy, the automotive manufacturer’s corporate social responsibility arm, which focuses on education as a cornerstone for community development. The company’s philanthropic strategy is built around three core pillars: Value, Care, and Tech.

“We’re proud to be able to give back to the communities that are integral to the fabric of our society. Education is the biggest contributor to progress, and the more people we can provide education to, the more they will contribute to their lives and their communities,” Whitfield said.

The program is currently being implemented across SOS Children’s Villages throughout South Africa, with the first group of participants already beginning their training.
