AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER

A senior ANC leader has been arrested and is expected in court to face charges of raping his two daughters.

The leader, a former member of parliament, ex provincial minister of finance and economic affairs and current member of the Mpumalanga provincial executive committee of the ANC, was arrested at his home.

The ANC has identified the leader but the law prohibits the media from identifying him until he has appeared and pleaded in court.

In a statement, the ANC in Mpumalanga expressed shock and anger. The ANC said the leader has been suspended. “The ANC takes these allegations seriously as the President has characterised gender-based violence, which include rape, as a pandemic which we should all be struggling to defeat at all costs,” the ANC said.

The party called for the rape suspect to step aside from all activities associated with the ANC.

“The ANC stands with the victims and complainants in this case and assures them that it will do all in its might for justice to be served. We also wish to let them know that the ANC led government has established different institutions to support victims of rape and all types of gender-based violence and they should feel free to approach those institutions,” the ANC added.
