TWO of Africa’s football powerhouses have crashed out of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, as Nigeria suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Argentina while South Africa fell 3-1 to Colombia in the Round of 16 matches in Chile.
Argentina Crush Nigeria in Dominant Display
Argentina delivered a commanding performance at the Estádio Nacional de Santiago, dismantling Nigeria 4-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals. The South Americans will now face Mexico on Saturday as they continue their impressive campaign.
The Albiceleste have been in scintillating form throughout the tournament, netting 12 goals in just four matches. Their tactical sophistication under coach Diego Placente has left opponents struggling to contain their fluid attacking play.
“The idea is for them to always play with freedom, of course. That’s very important for us,” Placente told FIFA after the match. “We know that they like playing together and that they like to play with freedom. So when you’re playing in your position and they’re playing the way they like to play, you’re always going to be happier.”
Captain Julio Soler, who appeared composed despite the celebratory atmosphere around him, emphasised the team’s unity and ambition. “We play with joy, we have a really good group, a very close group. I’m proud to be part of this group,” Soler said. “We also have a lot to offer; this is just the start. The best is yet to come, and it’s fantastic to keep playing at this World Cup.”
Argentina’s attacking system combines direct play with controlled possession, utilising quick passing in the opponent’s half to penetrate defences. The quality of Placente’s squad allows them to create chances through both deep passes and numerical overloads with shorter passing sequences.
Colombia Edge Past South Africa in Tight Contest

In the day’s other match, Colombia secured a 3-1 victory over South Africa, though the final scoreline belied a more competitive encounter than the margin suggests.
Colombia took an early lead through Joel Morales in the seventh minute, despite South Africa controlling much of the possession in the opening stages. The African side showed resilience, equalising from the penalty spot through Mfundo Vilakazi shortly after halftime to make it 1-1.
However, Colombia’s clinical finishing proved decisive. Neiser Villarreal restored the South American side’s lead 12 minutes after the equaliser, and a late goal in stoppage time sealed the 3-1 victory with approximately 20 minutes remaining in regulation time.
South Africa dominated ball possession for much of the match but struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut chances, ultimately falling victim to Colombia’s more efficient attacking play.
Continental Disappointment
The elimination of both Nigeria and South Africa represents a significant blow to African football at this year’s tournament. Both nations entered the competition with high hopes of making deep runs in Chile, but were ultimately outclassed by their South American opponents.
The results mean no African teams remain in the quarter-finals, continuing the continent’s struggle to make a major impact at FIFA youth tournaments in recent years.
Argentina will now prepare for their quarter-final clash with Mexico on Saturday, while Colombia await their last-eight opponents.
