From African roots to European glory: Nico Williams’ inspirational journey

IN a testament to perseverance and the power of dreams, Nico Williams, the son of Ghanaian immigrants, has become a European champion with the Spanish national football team. This remarkable achievement highlights the continuing impact of African-born players in European football.

Approximately 30 years ago, Maria Arthur, pregnant with her first child, embarked on a perilous journey from Ghana to Europe. Traversing Burkina Faso, Mali, and Algeria, she braved the scorching Sahara Desert on foot. Her determination led her to scale the fences of the Melilla border between Morocco and Spain, eventually crossing the Iberian Peninsula to reach Bilbao.

Today, her second son, Nico Williams, stands as a shining example of how far that journey has taken their family. Born in Pamplona, Spain, in 2002, Nico began his football career in the youth ranks of local club CD Pamplona before joining Athletic Bilbao’s famed academy at the age of 11.

Rising through the ranks, Williams made his first-team debut for Athletic Bilbao in 2021 and has since become a key player for the Basque club. His performances caught the eye of the Spanish national team selectors, leading to his international debut in 2022.

After helping Spain secure the European championship, Williams dedicated his gold medal to his mother, stating, “I dedicated the gold medal to my mother because she is my role model and source of inspiration in life.”

Williams’ story is part of a broader trend of African-born players and those of African descent making significant contributions to European football. Currently, it’s estimated that thousands of African-born players are plying their trade across various levels of European leagues.

This influence is particularly noticeable in the French national team, where players of African descent continue to play prominent roles. The multicultural composition of the French squad has been a key factor in their recent successes on the international stage.

As Nico Williams celebrates his European triumph, his journey from the son of African immigrants to a Spanish football star serves as an inspiration to many and underscores the rich tapestry of backgrounds that contribute to the beautiful game.

In the Euro2024 final, Williams came up against a player with a similar background – African roots and European as well as global greatness. Bukayo Saka, a star in the English national team, has his roots in Nigeria.

Saka was born on September 5, 2001, in London, England, to Nigerian parents. He joined Arsenal’s youth academy at the age of seven and progressed through their ranks.
