Stellenbosch United to play in English Next Gen Cup

STELLENBOSCH Football Club, based in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, have a golden ticket to participate in England’s Next Generation Cup, alongside seven invited clubs from England and India. 

This will be the second time the South African club has participated in the tournament; they lost 5-4 in penalties to England’s Wolverhampton Wolves in the 2023 final of the cup when it was hosted in India. 

Stellenbosch United’s side will represent as the 2023/24 DStv Diski Challenge Champions, which is a youth reserve team league for the top South African football teams in the Premier Soccer League, in the fifth edition of the Next Generation Cup. The team was first invited in 2020.  

They will compete against four age-group sides from top flight English teams, including Tottenham Hotspurs, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Everton

Officially named the Reliance Foundation Premier League Next Gen Cup, the Next Gen Cup is organised by the English Premier League in partnership with the Indian Super League and the South African Premier Division. It is part of the Premier League Youth Games initiative.

There will be three representatives from India for this edition, chosen through the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL), East Bengal FC, Muthoot FA, and RFDL winners Punjab FC.

“The event serves as a fantastic learning experience for the young players both on and off the pitch, providing them with a platform to interact with one another as well as learn about each other’s cultures.

The young Stellenbosch team won the Next Gen Cup title in 2022 when (now senior player) Devin Titus scored a first-half hat-trick in their 7-2 victory over Leicester City in the final.

Known as The Young Maroons, Stellenbosch will travel to the UK on July 29 and compete in the tournament from August 1 to 4.

According to the press release from Stellenbosch United, the competition will consist of four 50-minute match rounds, divided into two groups of four clubs, at Aston Villa’s Bodymoor Training Ground. 

The two teams at the top of the table will play each other in the final at Loughborough University Stadium.

The youth team also announced on their website that throughout their European trip, they will participate in a variety of additional events and knowledge-sharing seminars.
