Highly sought after Senagalese keeper moves to Chelsea

BOITUMELO RANTAO

BRITISH Premier league team Chelsea FC have secured the signature of Senagalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The goalkeeper has signed a five-year contract with the English club who succeeded in luring the 28-year old away from french club Rennes. Mendy made 25 appearances during the 2019/2020 season. He has moved to Chelsea for a transfer fee of £22 million.

Menday is  thrilled to be joining a club with such an illustrious history and was raring to get started.

“I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff,” the 28-year-old said. “I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started.” he added

Mendy also made his debut for the Senagalese national team in 2018 and has gone on to represent the Lions of Teranga a further eight times.

Senegal currently boasts a strong national team that endured AFCON heartbreak in 2019, falling to Algeria in the tournament final. The list includes notable players such as national team captain Kalidou Koulibaly, champions league-winning forward Sadio Mané(Liverpool), and defensive midfield stalwart Idrissa Gueye (Paris-Saint Germain).
