The Argentine previously held talks with the Catalan club and there was confidence a deal could be reached. The five-year deal would see the 6-time Ballon D’or winner accept a 50 percent wage reduction to nurse the economic crisis FC Barcelona have faced over the past year.

FC Barcelona released a statement on their website in confirmation “Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).
