Nick Cassidy & Citroën capture glory in Mexico

NICK Cassidy started 2026 on an exemplary note, winning the Mexico City E-Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Cassidy handed his team and newcomers to the Formula E World Championship series (FE), Citroën, their maiden win, setting themselves up as a forthcoming and fascinating team to watch as the season progresses. Edoardo Mortara delivered for Mahindra, securing second and his first podium of the season, as Formula E’s defending champion Oliver Rowland (Nissan) followed in third to notch his second podium of the campaign.

“I’m so so happy with that,” Cassidy exclaimed post-race. “I mean, with Citroën, what a first two races.”

His win comes after Cassidy gave Citroën their first podium in the Sao Paulo season opener, where he came in third place.

I didn’t think until the last lap that we were okay. I was happy with the P4 today, starting P13, my radio was very much like ‘let’s secure a good result’ but my engineer has always been making the right calls.

“This one is very much for him as it is for me and the whole team. It’s the team, the car, the package and the strategy that enabled us to win that race – you can’t win this race with a bad car,” he said.

Envision Racing’s Sebastien Buemi took pole position for the second race of the season, his first pole since 2023. DS Penske’s driver Taylor Barnard started in second after his time was deleted for track limits. Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara started third, followed by Mitch Evans, Nico Muller, Dan Ticktum, Jake Dennis, Oliver Rowland, Maximilian Gunther, and Anthony Felix Da Costa in the starting top ten.

Drama started from the race start when polesitter Buemi braked late when defending against Barnard at turn one, going off-track and rejoining the grid in 18th place, as Barnard took over as the race leader.

What followed was an exhilarating shuffle between the top seven, as drivers further down the field worked to close their gap to the frontrunners as attack modes were activated.

2024 Mexico E-Prix winner and World Champion, Pascal Wehrlein, made the first move on the activation of his allocated eight minutes of attack mode, using four minutes to push from eighth place to leading the race by the lap six.

The race remained fairly calm until around lap 17, when Mahindra’s Nyck de Vries stopped just off the racing line, causing a full course yellow flag.

When the race resumed on lap 22, Porsche’s Nico Muller held the lead, followed by Mortara, Wehrlein, Barnard, Dennis, Evans, Ticktum, da Costa and Rowland.

Four laps later, chaos unfolded at the hairpin turn involving Vergne, Jaguar Racing’s da Costa, and DS Penske’s Gunther, which saw Vergne and da Costa take damage.

Jaguar’s Mitch Evans took advantage of the chaos’ aftermath with his attack mode, sliding through to the race lead on lap 27 as Muller recovered from braking late while defending against Evans.

Known for his in-time race management, Nick Cassidy, on lap 30 used his stored energy and an overlap on attack mode to take the lead from Evans. Gaining 12 spots from the start in 13th, Cassidy held off Mahindra’s Mortara and Nissan’s Rowland to the chequered flag, taking his first win of the season and handing Citroën a massive boost for the team garage’s performance.

“What a weekend, and what a way to celebrate Formula E’s 150th race — especially knowing we were also the team that won the 50th and 100th milestones. Today feels incredibly special. Honestly, after qualifying, I couldn’t have imagined a result like this,” said Cyril Blais, Citroën Racing Formula E Team Principal.

“Once again, our performance highlights the strength and depth of this team and of our driver line-up. To start the season with a podium and follow it immediately with a victory in only the second race—what more could we ask for?”

Formula E continues with the next race destination in the United States, for the Miami E-Prix on January 31, which will be a home race for the following teams: Andretti, Cupra Kiro and DS Penske.
