Percy Tau recalled by Brighton & Albion

BOITUMELO RANTAO

SOUTH Africa’s top strike Percy Tau has returned to one of the best leagues in the world, the British Premier League and is set to feature for Brighton Hove & Albion in Britain’s Premier League.

Tau has been on loan in Belgium for two and-a-half years since being acquired in 2018.

The 26 year-old began his international club career in Belgium’s second division, before being sent to UEFA Champions League in Club Brugge for a loan spell. Tau netted four goals, and tallied 8 assists, in a league title winning season in 2019/20.

Tau then joined RSC Anderlecht, where he was managed by former Manchester City captain and Premier league winner Vincent Kompany, and remained until his loan spell was cut short by his parent club.

As a non-EU player, the South African has struggled to secure a work permit due to Bafana Bafana being outside the top 50 FIFA rankings. However, with Britain breaking away from the European Union – his loan exile could now end.

The South Coast outfit have had a stream of requests for the South African international but have held firm as they look to offer him a chance to shine in England’s premier division.

Head coach Graham Potter said, “We’re pleased to be able to welcome Percy to the club and begin working with him. I know he’s a player whose progress many of our fans have followed in recent seasons.

“We too have closely monitored his performances in Belgium in the last three years. He’s been playing at a really good level, particularly with Bruges and Anderlecht where he has been involved in the Champions League, and his next step is to show he is ready to make the transition into the Premier League.

“He brings some different attributes and qualities to the group and he wants to take the next step in his career. We’re looking forward to working with him.” Potts concluded
