Special Olympics lights flame of hope for inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities

SOUTH AFRICAN government officials, law enforcement, and disability advocates gathered Monday to advance efforts supporting citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities through a symbolic ceremony transferring responsibility for the 2026 Special Olympics National Games.

The Flame of Hope Handover Ceremony at Carousel Casino marked the official transition of hosting duties from Limpopo Province to North West Province, bringing together representatives from the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, the South African Police Service, and traditional leaders.

The event centered on the Flame of Hope, a global Special Olympics symbol representing the organization’s commitment to inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. Law enforcement officers participating in the international Law Enforcement Torch Run program serve as guardians of the flame, carrying it between communities to raise awareness about disability rights.

Representatives from the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities emphasized government support for expanding opportunities and visibility for people with disabilities nationwide. Their participation underscored that inclusion efforts extend beyond provincial initiatives to represent national policy priorities.

SAPS leadership from both provinces reaffirmed their role in protecting the flame and advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities within their communities.

Limpopo officials, who previously hosted the national games, formally transferred hosting responsibilities to North West Province. Provincial leaders from North West accepted the commitment to prepare for the 2026 Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games, which will bring together athletes, families, coaches and supporters from across the country.
