Tragedy strikes Dominican Republic: Jet Set Nightclub roof collapse claims 113 lives

THE Dominican Republic is reeling from one of its deadliest tragedies after the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed early Tuesday morning, killing at least 113 people and injuring over 150 others. The disaster has plunged the nation into mourning, as families and communities grapple with the devastating loss of life.

The collapse occurred just before 1:00 AM during a live performance by renowned merengue artist Rubby Pérez, who was among the deceased. Witnesses reported dust falling from the ceiling moments before concrete slabs came crashing down onto the crowded dance floor, where hundreds had gathered to enjoy the music. Verified footage from inside the venue captured the moment lights began to fall, followed by screams and chaos as the roof caved in.

Authorities estimate that between 500 and 1,000 patrons were inside the nightclub at the time. Rescue operations began immediately, with emergency responders working tirelessly to locate survivors trapped under the debris. Specialized teams from Puerto Rico and Israel joined local efforts to aid in search and recovery.

Among those killed were prominent public figures, including Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province; former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco Cabrera; and Rubby Pérez himself. The tragedy also claimed the lives of a cardiologist, a government architect, and a retired police officer.

As of Wednesday morning, only 32 victims had been identified, leaving many families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones. Outside the nightclub, mourners gathered to sing hymns and share memories of those lost.

Rescue teams employed drones, search dogs, and heavy machinery to comb through the wreckage. Despite their efforts, no additional survivors have been found since Tuesday afternoon. Emergency Operations Center director Juan Manuel Méndez vowed to continue searching as long as there were reports of missing persons.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear. Investigators are examining structural integrity issues and past incidents at the venue, including a fire in 2023 caused by lightning striking a nearby power plant.

The Jet Set nightclub has been a cultural cornerstone for decades, hosting entertainers, athletes, and political figures. Its collapse represents not only a physical loss but also an emotional blow to generations who cherished its significance. President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and pledged thorough investigations into the disaster.

This tragedy has united Dominicans in grief as they honour those lost while demanding answers about how such a catastrophic failure could occur at one of their most beloved venues.
