The Red Dawn: Hamilton’s Ferrari Awakening

IN the misty dawn at Fiorano, history whispered through the fog. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, approached the gleaming red SF-23 – his first Ferrari. The timing sheets would show 30 laps across three runs, but numbers couldn’t capture the weight of this moment.

“When I started the car up and drove through that garage door, I had the biggest smile on my face,” Hamilton told TheRace.com, his eyes bright with an enthusiasm that belied his two decades in Formula 1. “It reminded me of the very first time I tested a Formula 1 car.”

Under the watchful eyes of team principal Fred Vasseur, deputy Jerome d’Ambrosio, and Ferrari vice president Piero Ferrari himself, Hamilton emerged from the garage at 9:16 AM. The track was damp, but even the weather couldn’t dampen the electricity in the air. As conditions improved, Hamilton transitioned to slick Pirelli ‘Academy’ tyres, each lap building a bridge between past and future.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have many firsts in my career,” Hamilton reflected to TheRace.com. “From the first test to the first race, podium, win and championship, so I wasn’t sure how many more firsts I had but driving a Ferrari for the first time this morning was one of the best feelings of my life.”

The magic wasn’t lost on the tifosi either. They had gathered early on an overpass, braving fog and damp to witness this historic moment. Hamilton, touched by their dedication, made a special trip after his debrief to thank them personally.

“I already knew from the outside how passionate the Ferrari family is,” Hamilton shared with TheRace.com. “But to now witness it firsthand as a Ferrari driver has been awe-inspiring. That passion runs through their veins and you can’t help but be energised by it.”

Before handing over to his 2025 teammate Charles Leclerc, Hamilton’s final words to TheRace.com revealed both humility and hunger: “I’m so grateful for the love I have felt from everyone in Maranello this week, we have a lot of work to do but I can’t wait to get started.”
